8005738eaf Fix infinite loop on a truncated RFC4176 public key file.
You could reproduce this, for example, by cutting the final line
reading "---- END SSH2 PUBLIC KEY ----" off the end of a file, and
feeding it to Unix 'puttygen -l'.

rfc4716_loadpub() was looping round on get_chomped_line() until it
found a line starting with "-" after the base64 data. But it failed to
check for the end of the file as well, so if the data was truncated,
it would just keep spinning at the end of the file.

c780cffb7a Remove a pointless allocation.
The char buffer 'blob' allocated in read_blob was never actually used
for anything, so there was no need to allocate it - and also no need
for the assert() just before it, which was added in commit
63a58759b5 to be extra safe against integer overflow when
computing the buffer size.

I feel a bit silly for having added that assertion in the first place
rather than removing the allocation it was protecting! It was
unnecessary even then, and I completely failed to notice :-)

20f818af12 Rename 'ret' variables passed from allocation to return.
I mentioned recently (in commit 9e7d4c53d8) message that I'm no
longer fond of the variable name 'ret', because it's used in two quite
different contexts: it's the return value from a subroutine you just
called (e.g. 'int ret = read(fd, buf, len);' and then check for error
or EOF), or it's the value you're preparing to return from the
_containing_ routine (maybe by assigning it a default value and then
conditionally modifying it, or by starting at NULL and reallocating,
or setting it just before using the 'goto out' cleanup idiom). In the
past I've occasionally made mistakes by forgetting which meaning the
variable had, or accidentally conflating both uses.

If all else fails, I now prefer 'retd' (short for 'returned') in the
former situation, and 'toret' (obviously, the value 'to return') in
the latter case. But even better is to pick a name that actually says
something more specific about what the thing actually is.

One particular bad habit throughout this codebase is to have a set of
functions that deal with some object type (say 'Foo'), all *but one*
of which take a 'Foo *foo' parameter, but the foo_new() function
starts with 'Foo *ret = snew(Foo)'. If all the rest of them think the
canonical name for the ambient Foo is 'foo', so should foo_new()!

So here's a no-brainer start on cutting down on the uses of 'ret': I
looked for all the cases where it was being assigned the result of an
allocation, and renamed the variable to be a description of the thing
being allocated. In the case of a new() function belonging to a
family, I picked the same name as the rest of the functions in its own
family, for consistency. In other cases I picked something sensible.

One case where it _does_ make sense not to use your usual name for the
variable type is when you're cloning an existing object. In that case,
_neither_ of the Foo objects involved should be called 'foo', because
it's ambiguous! They should be named so you can see which is which. In
the two cases I found here, I've called them 'orig' and 'copy'.

As in the previous refactoring, many thanks to clang-rename for the
help.

cd7f6c4407 Certificate-aware handling of key fingerprints.
OpenSSH, when called on to give the fingerprint of a certified public
key, will in many circumstances generate the hash of the public blob
of the _underlying_ key, rather than the hash of the full certificate.

I think the hash of the certificate is also potentially useful (if
nothing else, it provides a way to tell apart multiple certificates on
the same key). But I can also see that it's useful to be able to
recognise a key as the same one 'really' (since all certificates on
the same key share a private key, so they're unavoidably related).

So I've dealt with this by introducing an extra pair of fingerprint
types, giving the cross product of {MD5, SHA-256} x {base key only,
full certificate}. You can manually select which one you want to see
in some circumstances (notably PuTTYgen), and in others (such as
diagnostics) both fingerprints will be emitted side by side via the
new functions ssh2_double_fingerprint[_blob].

The default, following OpenSSH, is to just fingerprint the base key.

4fa3480444 Formatting: realign run-on parenthesised stuff.
My bulk indentation check also turned up a lot of cases where a run-on
function call or if statement didn't have its later lines aligned
correctly relative to the open paren.

I think this is quite easy to do by getting things out of
sync (editing the first line of the function call and forgetting to
update the rest, perhaps even because you never _saw_ the rest during
a search-replace). But a few didn't quite fit into that pattern, in
particular an outright misleading case in unix/askpass.c where the
second line of a call was aligned neatly below the _wrong_ one of the
open parens on the opening line.

Restored as many alignments as I could easily find.

34d01e1b65 Family of key types for OpenSSH certificates.
This commit is groundwork for full certificate support, but doesn't
complete the job by itself. It introduces the new key types, and adds
a test in cryptsuite ensuring they work as expected, but nothing else.

If you manually construct a PPK file for one of the new key types, so
that it has a certificate in the public key field, then this commit
enables PuTTY to present that key to a server for user authentication,
either directly or via Pageant storing and using it. But I haven't yet
provided any mechanism for making such a PPK, so by itself, this isn't
much use.

Also, these new key types are not yet included in the KEXINIT host
keys list, because if they were, they'd just be treated as normal host
keys, in that you'd be asked to manually confirm the SSH fingerprint
of the certificate. I'll enable them for host keys once I add the
missing pieces.

043c24844a Improve the base64 utility functions.
The low-level functions to handle a single atom of base64 at a time
have been in 'utils' / misc.h for ages, but the higher-level family of
base64_encode functions that handle a whole data block were hidden
away in sshpubk.c, and there was no higher-level decode function at
all.

Now moved both into 'utils' modules and declared them in misc.h rather
than ssh.h. Also, improved the APIs: they all take ptrlen in place of
separate data and length arguments, their naming is more consistent
and more explicit (the previous base64_encode which didn't name its
destination is now base64_encode_fp), and the encode functions now
accept cpl == 0 as a special case meaning that the output base64 data
is wanted in the form of an unbroken single-line string with no
trailing \n.

ffa25be185 Fix error messages in ppk_loadpub_s.
The function will accept a public key file or a PPK, but if it fails
to parse as any of those, the error message says "not a PuTTY SSH-2
private key", which is particularly incongruous in situations where
you're specifically _not_ after the private half of the key.

Now says "not a public key or a PuTTY SSH-2 private key".

Every time I've had to do this before, I've always done the three-line
dance of initialising a BinarySource and calling get_string on it.
It's long past time I wrapped that up into a convenient subroutine.

e7d51505c7 Utility function strbuf_dup.
If you already have a string (of potentially-binary data) in the form
of a ptrlen reference to somewhere else, and you want to keep a copy
somewhere, it's useful to copy it into a strbuf. But it takes a couple
of lines of faff to do that, and it's nicer to wrap that up into a
tiny helper function.

This commit adds that helper function strbuf_dup, and its non-movable
sibling strbuf_dup_nm for secret data. Also, gone through the existing
code and found a bunch of cases where this makes things less verbose.

1500da80f1 Move key_components management functions into utils.
They're pretty much self-contained, and don't really need to be in the
same module as sshpubk.c (which has other dependencies). Move them out
into a utils module, where pulling them in won't pull in anything else
unwanted.

be8d3974ff Generalise strbuf_catf() into put_fmt().
marshal.h now provides a macro put_fmt() which allows you to write
arbitrary printf-formatted data to an arbitrary BinarySink.

We already had this facility for strbufs in particular, in the form of
strbuf_catf(). That was able to take advantage of knowing the inner
structure of a strbuf to minimise memory allocation (it would snprintf
directly into the strbuf's existing buffer if possible). For a general
black-box BinarySink we can't do that, so instead we dupvprintf into a
temporary buffer.

For consistency, I've removed strbuf_catf, and converted all uses of
it into the new put_fmt - and I've also added an extra vtable method
in the BinarySink API, so that put_fmt can still use strbuf_catf's
more efficient memory management when talking to a strbuf, and fall
back to the simpler strategy when that's not available.

d008d235f3 Fix tight loop on reading truncated key files.
In commit 9cc586e605 I changed the low-level key-file reading
routines like read_header and read_body so that they read from a
BinarySource via get_byte(), rather than from a FILE * via fgetc. But
I forgot that the two functions don't signal end-of-file the same way,
so testing the return value of get_byte() against EOF is pointless and
will never match, and conversely, real EOF won't be spotted unless you
also examine the error indicator in the BinarySource.

As a result, a key file that ends without a trailing newline will
cause a tight loop in one of those low-level read routines.

1c039d0a7b Spelling: standardise on "DSA", not "DSS".
This code base has always been a bit confused about which spelling it
likes to use to refer to that signature algorithm. The SSH protocol id
is "ssh-dss". But everyone I know refers to it as the Digital
Signature _Algorithm_, not the Digital Signature _Standard_.

When I moved everything down into the crypto subdir, I took the
opportunity to rename sshdss.c to dsa.c. Now I'm doing the rest of the
job: all internal identifiers and code comments refer to DSA, and the
spelling "dss" only survives in externally visible identifiers that
have to remain constant.

(Such identifiers include the SSH protocol id, and also the string id
used to identify the key type in PuTTY's own host key cache. We can't
change the latter without causing everyone a backwards-compatibility
headache, and if we _did_ ever decide to do that, we'd surely want to
do a much more thorough job of making the cache format more sensible!)

995e2f7164 Add API for getting all of a key's fingerprints.
ssh2_all_fingerprints() and friends will return a small 'char **'
array, containing all the fingerprints of a key that we know how to
generate, indexed by the FingerprintType enum. The result requires
complex freeing, so there's an ssh2_free_all_fingerprints as well.

For SSH-1 RSA keys, we refuse to generate any fingerprint except the
old SSH-1 MD5 version, because there's no other fingerprint type I
know of that anyone else uses. So I've got a function that returns the
same 'char **' for an SSH-1 key, but it only fills in the MD5 slot,
and leaves the rest NULL.

As a result, I also need a dynamic function that takes a fingerprint
list and returns the id of the most preferred fingerprint type in it
_that actually exists_.

NFC: this API is introduced, but not yet used.

1da353e649 Introduce OpenSSH-compatible SHA256 key fingerprinting.
There's a new enumeration of fingerprint types, and you tell
ssh2_fingerprint() or ssh2_fingerprint_blob() which of them to use.

So far, this is only implemented behind the scenes, and exposed for
testcrypt to test. All the call sites of ssh2_fingerprint pass a fixed
default fptype, which is still set to the old MD5. That will change
shortly.

e9aa28fe02 Restore the ability to write out PPK v2.
This commit adds the capability in principle to ppk_save_sb, by adding
a fmt_version field in the save parameters structure. As yet it's not
connected up to any user interface in PuTTYgen, but I think I'll need
to, because currently there's no way at all to convert PPK v3 back to
v2, and surely people will need to interoperate with older
installations of PuTTY, or with other PPK-consuming software.

8eb4cd5674 Fix determinism failures in cgtest.
Thanks to Pavel and his CI for pointing out what I'd forgotten: the
automated test of cmdgen.c expects that round-tripping a PPK file to
some other format and back will regenerate the identical file. Of
course, with a randomised salt in the new-look password hash, that
isn't true any more in normal usage.

Fixed by adding an option in the existing parameters structure to
provide a salt override. That shouldn't be used anywhere except
cgtest, but in cgtest, it restores the determinism we need.

Another potential (but not guaranteed) source of difference is the
automatic time-scaling of the Argon2 parameter choice. So I've turned
that off too, while I'm at it.

08d17140a0 Introduce PPK file format version 3.
This removes both uses of SHA-1 in the file format: it was used as the
MAC protecting the key file against tamperproofing, and also used in
the key derivation step that converted the user's passphrase to cipher
and MAC keys.

The MAC is simply upgraded from HMAC-SHA-1 to HMAC-SHA-256; it is
otherwise unchanged in how it's applied (in particular, to what data).

The key derivation is totally reworked, to be based on Argon2, which
I've just added to the code base. This should make stolen encrypted
key files more resistant to brute-force attack.

Argon2 has assorted configurable parameters for memory and CPU usage;
the new key format includes all those parameters. So there's no reason
we can't have them under user control, if a user wants to be
particularly vigorous or particularly lightweight with their own key
files. They could even switch to one of the other flavours of Argon2,
if they thought side channels were an especially large or small risk
in their particular environment. In this commit I haven't added any UI
for controlling that kind of thing, but the PPK loading function is
all set up to cope, so that can all be added in a future commit
without having to change the file format.

While I'm at it, I've also switched the CBC encryption to using a
random IV (or rather, one derived from the passphrase along with the
cipher and MAC keys). That's more like normal SSH-2 practice.

6f025c0b84 Refactoring to prepare for changes in the PPK format.
'bool old_fmt' in ppk_load_s has now given way to a numeric version
field, which will allow it to be set to 3 in future, instead of just 1
or 2. The ad-hoc integer variable 'cipher' is replaced with a pointer
to a small struct that mentions individual details like key lengths,
to aid parametrisation.

The old ssh2_ppk_derivekey is now a larger function that derives all
three of the key components used in the private-blob protection: not
just the cipher key, but the cipher IV and the MAC key as well. The
main part of it is a switch on the file-format version, which
currently has only one case (PPK v1 and v2 don't differ in the key
derivation), but gives me a handy place to drop in a new case in a
future commit, changing the derivation of all those things.

All the key material is stored end-to-end in a single strbuf, with
ptrlens pointing into it. That makes it easy to free all in one go
later.

No functional change: currently, the IV passed in is always zero
(except in the test suite). But this prepares to change that in a
future revision of the key file format.

29b8e26f7d Fix duplicated exit code in ppk_load_s.
There's no need to have one bunch of free operations before returning
success and another version before returning error. Easier to just set
up the state in the former case so that we can fall through to the
latter.

147adf4e76 Move PPK format documentation into a manual appendix.
Somebody on comp.security.ssh asked about it recently, and I decided
that storing it in a comment in the key file was not really good
enough. Also, that comment was incomplete (it listed the private key
formats for RSA and DSA but not any of the newer ECC key types, simple
as their private-key formats may be).

24444eb396 Expose a global list of known host key algorithms.
The information was already centralised in find_pubkey_alg, but that
had a query-based API that couldn't enumerate the key types. Now I
expose an underlying array so that it's possible to iterate over them.

Also, I'd forgotten to add the two new rsa-sha2-* algorithms to
find_pubkey_alg. That's also done as part of this commit.

a085acbadf Support the new "ssh-ed448" key type.
This is standardised by RFC 8709 at SHOULD level, and for us it's not
too difficult (because we use general-purpose elliptic-curve code). So
let's be up to date for a change, and add it.

This implementation uses all the formats defined in the RFC. But we
also have to choose a wire format for the public+private key blob sent
to an agent, and since the OpenSSH agent protocol is the de facto
standard but not (yet?) handled by the IETF, OpenSSH themselves get to
say what the format for a key should or shouldn't be. So if they don't
support a particular key method, what do you do?

I checked with them, and they agreed that there's an obviously right
format for Ed448 keys, which is to do them exactly like Ed25519 except
that you have a 57-byte string everywhere Ed25519 had a 32-byte
string. So I've done that.

c18e5dc8fb cmdgen: add a --dump option.
Also spelled '-O text', this takes a public or private key as input,
and produces on standard output a dump of all the actual numbers
involved in the key: the exponent and modulus for RSA, the p,q,g,y
parameters for DSA, the affine x and y coordinates of the public
elliptic curve point for ECC keys, and all the extra bits and pieces
in the private keys too.

Partly I expect this to be useful to me for debugging: I've had to
paste key files a few too many times through base64 decoders and hex
dump tools, then manually decode SSH marshalling and paste the result
into the Python REPL to get an integer object. Now I should be able to
get _straight_ to text I can paste into Python.

But also, it's a way that other applications can use the key
generator: if you need to generate, say, an RSA key in some format I
don't support (I've recently heard of an XML-based one, for example),
then you can run 'puttygen -t rsa --dump' and have it print the
elements of a freshly generated keypair on standard output, and then
all you have to do is understand the output format.

e0e133b4b0 Expose the rest of LoadedFile in headers.
This will allow it to be used more conveniently for things other than
key files.

For the moment, the implementation still lives in sshpubk.c. Moving it
out into utils.c or misc.c would be nicer, but it has awkward
dependencies on marshal.c and the per-platform f_open function.
Perhaps another time.

7599a57a33 Allow cmdgen to read keys from standard input.
This reworks the cmdgen main program so that it loads the input file
into a LoadedFile right at the start, and then every time it needs to
do something with the contents, it calls one of the API functions
taking a BinarySource instead of one taking a Filename.

The usefulness of this is that now we can read from things that aren't
regular files, and can't be rewound or reopened. In particular, the
filename "-" is now taken (per the usual convention) to mean standard
input.

So now you can pipe a public or private key file into cmdgen's
standard input and have it do something useful. For example, I was
recently experimenting with the SFTP-only SSH server that comes with
'proftpd', which keeps its authorized_keys file in RFC 4716 format
instead of the OpenSSH one-liner format, and I found I wanted to do

  grep 'my-key-comment' ~/.ssh/authorized_keys | puttygen -p -

to quickly get hold of my existing public key to put in that file. But
I had to go via a temporary file to make that work, because puttygen
couldn't read from standard input. Next time, it will be able to!

5db2f4ca7e Expose lf_load_keyfile outside sshpubk.c.
I'm about to use it in cmdgen for a minor UI improvement. Also, I
expect it to be useful in the Pageant client code sooner or later.

While I'm here, I've also tweaked its UI a little so that it reports a
more precise error, and provided a version that can read from an
already open stdio stream.

76430f8237 Assorted benign warning fixes.
These were just too footling for even me to bother splitting up into
multiple commits:

 - a couple of int -> size_t changes left out of the big-bang commit
   0cda34c6f

 - a few 'const' added to pointer-type casts that are only going to be
   read from (leaving out the const provokes a warning if the pointer
   was const _before_ the cast)

 - a couple of 'return' statements trying to pass the void return of
   one function through to another.

 - another missing (void) in a declaration in putty.h (but this one
   didn't cause any knock-on confusion).

 - a few tweaks to macros, to arrange that they eat a semicolon after
   the macro call (extra do ... while (0) wrappers, mostly, and one
   case where I had to do it another way because the macro included a
   variable declaration intended to remain in scope)

 - reworked key_type_to_str to stop putting an unreachable 'break'
   statement after every 'return'

 - removed yet another type-check of a function loaded from a Windows
   system DLL

 - and finally, a totally spurious semicolon right after an open brace
   in mainchan.c.

82a7e8c4ac New wrapper macro for printf("%zu"), for old VS compat.
A user reports that Visual Studio 2013 and earlier have printf
implementations in their C library that don't support the 'z' modifier
to indicate that an integer argument is size_t. The 'I' modifier
apparently works in place of it.

To avoid littering ifdefs everywhere, I've invented my own inttypes.h
style macros to wrap size_t formatting directives, which are defined
to %zu and %zx normally, or %Iu and %Ix in old-VS mode. Those are in
defs.h, and they're used everywhere that a %z might otherwise get into
the Windows build.

9cc586e605 Rewrite SSH key loading and saving using marshal.h.
All the functions that read and write public and private keys to a
FILE * are now small wrappers on top of an underlying set of functions
that read data in the same format from a BinarySource, or write it to
a strbuf. This sets me up to deal with key files in contexts other
than on disk.

e5fbed7632 Rename all public/private key load/save functions.
Now they have names that are more consistent (no more userkey_this but
that_userkey); a bit shorter; and, most importantly, all the current
functions end in _f to indicate that they deal with keys stored in
disk files. I'm about to add a second set of entry points that deal
with keys via the more general BinarySource / BinarySink interface,
which will sit alongside these with a different suffix.

cbfd7dadac Change line ending wording in PPK format spec.
This doesn't affect what files are _legal_: the spec said we tolerated
three kinds of line ending, and it still says we tolerate the same
three. But I noticed that we're actually outputting \n by preference,
whereas the spec said we prefer \r\n. I'd rather change the docs than
the code.

1344d4d1cd Adopt the new hash API functions where they're useful.
This commit switches as many ssh_hash_free / ssh_hash_new pairs as
possible to reuse the previous hash object via ssh_hash_reset. Also a
few other cleanups: use the wrapper function hash_simple() where
possible, and I've also introduced ssh_hash_digest_nondestructive()
and switched to that where possible as well.

5d718ef64b Whitespace rationalisation of entire code base.
The number of people has been steadily increasing who read our source
code with an editor that thinks tab stops are 4 spaces apart, as
opposed to the traditional tty-derived 8 that the PuTTY code expects.

So I've been wondering for ages about just fixing it, and switching to
a spaces-only policy throughout the code. And I recently found out
about 'git blame -w', which should make this change not too disruptive
for the purposes of source-control archaeology; so perhaps now is the
time.

While I'm at it, I've also taken the opportunity to remove all the
trailing spaces from source lines (on the basis that git dislikes
them, and is the only thing that seems to have a strong opinion one
way or the other).
    
Apologies to anyone downstream of this code who has complicated patch
sets to rebase past this change. I don't intend it to be needed again.

bf661a7a2c Rename SSH-1 cipher constants to start "SSH1_".
They're called things like SSH_CIPHER_3DES in the SSH-1 spec, but I
don't normally let that stop me adding the disambiguating '1' in the
names I give constants inside this code base. These ones are long
overdue for some disambiguation.

bde7b6b158 Change sensitive strbufs/sgrowarrays to the new _nm version.
The _nm strategy is slower, so I don't want to just change everything
over no matter what its contents. In this pass I've tried to catch
everything that holds the _really_ sensitive things like passwords,
private keys and session keys.

Windows clipboard data in RTF, which was absolutely crying out for
strbuf_catf, and now it's got it.

5b17a2ce20 Assorted further migration to ptrlen.
The local put_mp_*_from_string functions in import.c now take ptrlen
(which simplifies essentially all their call sites); so does the local
function logwrite() in logging.c, and so does ssh2_fingerprint_blob.

acc21c4c0f Stop using unqualified {GET,PUT}_32BIT.
Those were a reasonable abbreviation when the code almost never had to
deal with little-endian numbers, but they've crept into enough places
now (e.g. the ECC formatting) that I think I'd now prefer that every
use of the integer read/write macros was clearly marked with its
endianness.

So all uses of GET_??BIT and PUT_??BIT are now qualified. The special
versions in x11fwd.c, which used variable endianness because so does
the X11 protocol, are suffixed _X11 to make that clear, and where that
pushed line lengths over 80 characters I've taken the opportunity to
name a local variable to remind me of what that extra parameter
actually does.

628e794832 Replace random_byte() with random_read().
This is in preparation for a PRNG revamp which will want to have a
well defined boundary for any given request-for-randomness, so that it
can destroy the evidence afterwards. So no more looping round calling
random_byte() and then stopping when we feel like it: now you say up
front how many random bytes you want, and call random_read() which
gives you that many in one go.

Most of the call sites that had to be fixed are fairly mechanical, and
quite a few ended up more concise afterwards. A few became more
cumbersome, such as mp_random_bits, in which the new API doesn't let
me load the random bytes directly into the target integer without
triggering undefined behaviour, so instead I have to allocate a
separate temporary buffer.

The _most_ interesting call site was in the PKCS#1 v1.5 padding code
in sshrsa.c (used in SSH-1), in which you need a stream of _nonzero_
random bytes. The previous code just looped on random_byte, retrying
if it got a zero. Now I'm doing a much more interesting thing with an
mpint, essentially scaling a binary fraction repeatedly to extract a
number in the range [0,255) and then adding 1 to it.

Leak Sanitiser pointed out in passing that the blob read from the key
file wasn't being freed.

0d2d20aad0 Access all hashes and MACs through the standard API.
All the hash-specific state structures, and the functions that
directly accessed them, are now local to the source files implementing
the hashes themselves. Everywhere we previously used those types or
functions, we're now using the standard ssh_hash or ssh2_mac API.

The 'simple' functions (hmacmd5_simple, SHA_Simple etc) are now a pair
of wrappers in sshauxcrypt.c, each of which takes an algorithm
structure and can do the same conceptual thing regardless of what it
is.

35690040fd Remove a lot of pointless 'struct' keywords.
This is the commit that f3295e0fb _should_ have been. Yesterday I just
added some typedefs so that I didn't have to wear out my fingers
typing 'struct' in new code, but what I ought to have done is to move
all the typedefs into defs.h with the rest, and then go through
cleaning up the legacy 'struct's all through the existing code.

But I was mostly trying to concentrate on getting the test suite
finished, so I just did the minimum. Now it's time to come back and do
it better.

0112936ef7 Replace assert(false) with an unreachable() macro.
Taking a leaf out of the LLVM code base: this macro still includes an
assert(false) so that the message will show up in a typical build, but
it follows it up with a call to a function explicitly marked as no-
return.

So this ought to do a better job of convincing compilers that once a
code path hits this function it _really doesn't_ have to still faff
about with making up a bogus return value or filling in a variable
that 'might be used uninitialised' in the following code that won't be
reached anyway.

I've gone through the existing code looking for the assert(false) /
assert(0) idiom and replaced all the ones I found with the new macro,
which also meant I could remove a few pointless return statements and
variable initialisations that I'd already had to put in to placate
compiler front ends.
